The Reverend Charles E. Goodman, Jr.
serves as the Senior Pastor/Teacher of The Historic
Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, GA. Pastor
Goodman is a native of North Carolina. Before
beginning his kingdom assignment at Tabernacle, he
shepherded the Pleasant View Missionary Baptist
Church located in Salem, AL for 3 ½ years.
Pastor Goodman graduated at the top of his class
from James B. Dudley High School in 1997.
He also attended Wake Forest University in Winston
Salem, NC where he graduated with honors. His hunger
and desire to be enriched intellectually and
spiritually led Dr. Goodman to matriculate to
Candler School of Theology located on the campus of
Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He graduated in May
2005 with a Master of Divinity Degree with a
concentration in Homiletics and Black Church
Studies. In addition to providing leadership to the
Tabernacle Baptist Church, Dr. Goodman completed the
Doctor of Ministry Program at Wesley Theological
Seminary in Washington, DC, with a concentration in
Preaching for the 21st Century in May 2009. Dr.
Goodman has also been blessed to participate in the
Institute of Preaching and Pastoral Renewal program
at Candler School of Theology on the campus of Emory
University, which allowed him to travel abroad to
preach and study in the Holy Land in the spring of
2006.
Pastor Goodman commenced his preaching ministry
at the age of 21 and Pastoral ministry at 23. God
has favored him by allowing tremendous and explosive
growth to accompany his ministry. His first
congregation became the fastest growing congregation
in East Alabama in just three years. After
faithfully serving at Pleasant View Baptist Church,
God elevated Dr. Goodman to become Pastor/Teacher of
The Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church of Augusta,
GA in December 2006 at the tender age of 27. Even
though Dr. Goodman has only been at Tabernacle
Baptist Church for a short while, his tenure has
been marked with success. Under his leadership, the
ground breaking and construction has been completed
on the Tabernacle Baptist Church Family Life Center
facility that houses the administrative and
ministerial arm of the church. This is just the
beginning of the vision God has given him to develop
the Tabernacle Baptist Church Campus. He has also
hired additional staff to help to meet the needs of
this growing congregation with a membership which
exceeds an excess of 3,300 people. As the
Under-Shepherd of The Historic Tabernacle Baptist
Church, Dr. Goodman is proud to follow in the
footsteps of great Pastors and Preachers who
preceded him, men such as: Dr. C. T. Walker, Dr. C.
S. Hamilton and Rev. Otis Moss III.
Pastor Goodman was inducted into the prestigious Martin
Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers of Morehouse
College in April 2008. He was also recognized by the
African American Pulpit as one of the “20-to-Watch”
Young Preachers under the age of 40 in the Summer
2008 issue, at the age of 28, one of the youngest to
ever achieve both of these distinctions. His sermon,
“The Curse of Being Average” was also featured in
African American Pulpit, Judson Press, Summer 2008
issue. Dr. Goodman was voted one of “America’s Most
Loved Pastors” in the September 2006 edition of
Gospel Today Magazine. He is also a proud member of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
With a practical, yet insightful and charismatic preaching
style, Dr. Goodman is dedicated to spreading the good
news of the Gospel to everyone he meets. He is a sought after
speaker, revivalist and lecturer, who is called on to empower
and encourage the people of God as he travels the world
proclaiming the Word of God.
